FAQ: What does technology mean in the context of the BTWC?
In the context of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) , ‘technology’ means any information (including intangible information and knowledge contained in software, patents, and other technical “know-how”), related to, for example, processes for the manufacture or handling of biological agents or toxins and pertaining to the use of certain process equipment, that can be used for:
- the development, production or use of any goods or software; or
- the development, or the operation, of an industrial or commercial activity or an activity of any other kind whatsoever which may be misused for biological weapon purposes.
