FAQ: What does technology mean in the context of the BTWC?

In the context of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC), ‘technology’ means any information (including intangible information and knowledge contained in software, patents, and other technical “know-how”), related to, for example, processes for the manufacture or handling of biological agents or toxins and pertaining to the use of certain process equipment, that can be used for:
  • the development, production or use of any goods or software; or
  • the development, or the operation, of an industrial or commercial activity or an activity of any other kind whatsoever which may be misused for biological weapon purposes.
